The Orange County Health Agency reported 5,953 new cases of coronavirus on Saturday, December 26, increasing the cumulative total in the county to 144,263 cases since the screening began. The county did not post an update on Friday, December 25.
The report showed a total of 1,858 cases among inmates, while an outbreak in the Orange County prison system continues.
The county also notified 1,957 patients in local hospitals with the coronavirus on Saturday.
There were 432 patients listed in intensive care units on Saturday. ICU capacity is decreasing in Southern California. The percentages shown here have been adjusted by state public health officials to represent the high levels of patients with COVID-19 among all ICU patients. More real beds may be available.
It is estimated that 41,087 cases of the virus have been reported in the last 14 days in Orange County.
The county update reported that 1,964,297 tests have been performed for coronavirus since testing began locally, with at least 37,585 tests reported in the past 24 hours.
There were 63 new deaths reported by the county on Saturday, increasing the total number of reported deaths to 1,845. The most recent death recorded was on December 19.
Of the 1,845 cumulative deaths reported by the virus, 638 were qualified nursing residents, 180 were in assisted living facilities and four were listed as homeless.
The breakdown of deaths by age in the county is as follows:
- 85 and older: 33.12% (611, up to 20)
- 75-84: 22.11% (408, up to 15)
- 65-74: 19.62% (362, up to 11)
- 55-64: 13.55% (250, up to 8)
- 45-54: 7.53% (139, up to 8)
- 35-44: 2.33% (43, up to 1)
- 25-34: 1.41% (26)
- 18-24: 0.27% (5)
- 17 and younger: 0.05% (1)
Data on deaths in the county are compiled from death certificates or collected during case investigations and can take weeks to process, officials say.
It is estimated that about 79,794 people have recovered by Saturday. The count of people who recovered is based on the cumulative case count from the previous 28 days.
