5-year-old girl wakes up from coma almost 2 weeks after accident involving former Chiefs coach Britt Reid

The 5-year-old girl injured in an accident involving former Kansas City Chiefs coach Britt Reid woke up from a coma 11 days after the accident, her family said.

“Ariel is awake,” the girl’s cousin, Tiffany Verhulst, said on Monday on a GoFundMe page created to cover the 5-year-old’s medical expenses.

No further details on Ariel’s condition were available.

Ariel was one of two children injured in the February 4 car accident near Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. The other child suffered injuries that did not threaten his life.

Reid remains under investigation for driving deficiency. He is not facing charges at this time.

Reid told officers he drank two to three drinks and was under Adderall’s prescription at the time of the incident, FOX 4 Kansas City reported earlier, citing police documents.

Police said the investigation of the accident would take at least a month, the station said. The results of the blood tests to determine if Reid was impaired should take about four to six weeks.

Reid, the 35-year-old son of Chiefs coach Andy Reid, has been placed on administrative leave from the Chiefs for the term of his contract, which has expired, and he is no longer a staff member, ESPN reported last week.

The NFL released a statement to the media last week about the incident involving Reid.

“Our main concern is with the girl, her family and the others injured,” said the NFL. “The matter will be analyzed in accordance with the NFL’s personal conduct policy. We will continue to monitor developments and when law enforcement has completed its analysis, we will address this issue and take appropriate action.”
