5-star quarterback Gunner Stockton unzips South Carolina

One of the key quarterback prospects in the 2022 recruiting cycle is not compromised yet again, with 5-star quarterback Gunner Stockton giving up on his promise to South Carolina on Tuesday.

Stockton committed to Will Muschamp and the Gamecocks in August.

“In August, I made the decision to commit to the university, the program and the team,” said Stockton in a note posted on Twitter. “A lot has changed since that time, and I feel that I must reevaluate my situation.”

At the time of her engagement, Georgia ended up as runner-up in Stockton’s services. Bulldogs do not yet have a 2022 quarterback appointment. Georgia hired 2021 quarterback Brock Vandagriff, who was rated as a potential 5 star and ranked 14th in the overall 247Sports Composite ranking.

However, there is another team that now looks set to be a serious threat to Stockton’s services at Auburn. The Tigers recently hired former South Carolina offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, away from Shane Beamer and the South Carolina team.

Bobo’s father, George, is a friend of the Stockton family and has worked with the 2022 quarterback since he was young. The relationship with Mike played a significant role in Stockton’s commitment the first time.

Auburn hired 4-star quarterback Dematrius Davis as part of the 2021 hiring class. The current starter, Bo Nix, will be a junior during the 2021 season.

Stockton plays for Raburn County High School in Tiger, Georgia, where he led his team to a semifinal appearance in the state playoffs this year. He also won a face-to-face victory over Vandagriff when Rabun County and Prince Avenue played earlier in the season. It was the only time Vandagriff lost in his senior season.

According to MaxPreps.com, Stockton shot for 45 touchdowns and 3128 yards this season, while racing for another 26 scores and 1,581 yards. Stockton is the potential number 27 in the 2022 class and the two highest-ranked defender. He is also the third best player in the state.

Vandagriff starts classes in Georgia this week and is already on campus, along with 15 other signers from 2,021. The Bulldogs finished with class # 3 in the 2021 recruitment cycle.
