Michigan football has just won a major victory on the recruiting trail.
Grosse Pointe South cornerback Will Johnson committed to the Wolverines on Sunday. Johnson, a member of the 2022 recruiting class, is a potential five-star customer ranked 11th overall, according to the 247Sports Composite ranking. He is the top ranked candidate in the state of Michigan.
Johnson chose Michigan over Ohio State and USC. He also reported offers from Alabama, LSU and Notre Dame, among others.

Johnson, six feet tall and 190 pounds, has been a highly praised recruit for years. He is the son of Deon Johnson, who was a cornerback to the All-State Dream Team at Detroit King and played in Michigan from 1990-94.
Based on his ranking, Johnson would be the sixth highest-ranked candidate to sign with Michigan in the era of modern recruitment rankings, according to the 247Sports database. He would also be the first recruit in the state with the highest ranking to choose the Wolverines since the 2018 cycle.

“Big size and still growing,” wrote 247Sports sports analyst Allen Trieu. “It is long, but it is also filled and looks like a possible prototypical external cornerback. Good athlete who stands out on the basketball court and showed skills with the first line ball on the football field. Johnson is the sixth candidate to enter Michigan’s 2022 class, along with four-star athlete Taylor Groves, four-star athlete Kody Jones, three-star tight end Marlin Klein, three-star striker Davonte Miles (River Rouge) and three star offensive attack Connor Jones.
