Michigan football has just won a major victory on the recruiting trail.

Grosse Pointe South cornerback Will Johnson committed to the Wolverines on Sunday. Johnson, a member of the 2022 recruiting class, is a potential five-star customer ranked 11th overall, according to the 247Sports Composite ranking. He is the top ranked candidate in the state of Michigan.

Johnson chose Michigan over Ohio State and USC. He also reported offers from Alabama, LSU and Notre Dame, among others.

Johnson, six feet tall and 190 pounds, has been a highly praised recruit for years. He is the son of Deon Johnson, who was a cornerback to the All-State Dream Team at Detroit King and played in Michigan from 1990-94.

Based on his ranking, Johnson would be the sixth highest-ranked candidate to sign with Michigan in the era of modern recruitment rankings, according to the 247Sports database. He would also be the first recruit in the state with the highest ranking to choose the Wolverines since the 2018 cycle.
