5 people, including pregnant woman, killed in mass shooting in Indianapolis

The police say this “does not appear to be a random act”.

Five people died after a mass shooting in Indianapolis on Sunday morning, police said.

One of the dead people was pregnant – the woman’s fetus was also killed. A boy, wounded by a firearm, was taken to a nearby hospital and is expected to survive, police said.

The head of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, Randall Taylor, called the incident “the biggest mass shooting in the city in more than a decade”.

Police received a call to 911 before 4 am and discovered a boy at block 3300 on East 36th Street who was shot, according to the police. Officers went to 3500 Adams Street and found five dead inside a house, police said.

“This does not appear to be a random act,” Sgt IMPD. Shane Foley said at a news conference late Sunday afternoon.

No suspects were identified until 4 pm and detectives continued to search the scene for clues, police said.

Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett was thrilled during the press conference and said he called the US attorney general’s office and the FBI to help with the investigation.

“I want those responsible to know that the full power of local, state and federal authorities is coming to them as I speak,” said Hogsett. “Coming for them today, coming for them tonight, coming for them tomorrow … coming for them as long as necessary.”
