5 children, 1 adult killed in Oklahoma shooting

Five children and an adult were killed in what is believed to be a morning shootout on Tuesday that ended with a relative of the victims in custody, officials in eastern Oklahoma said.

Police responded to a 1:30 am call from several people shot at a residence in southeastern Muskogee, and when police arrived, a suspect emerged brandishing a gun, officials said.

A policeman shot and missed the suspect, who was later arrested after a short chase, police said. The suspect is related to the victims, Muskogee police chief Johnny Teehee told NBC News.

Inside the residence, the police found four deceased children and a deceased adult.

“A fifth child died after being taken to a hospital in Tulsa,” police said in a statement. “There was also an adult woman with fatal injuries taken to a hospital in Tulsa.”

Muskogee is about 50 miles southeast of Tulsa.
