Welcome to the 361st edition of Android Apps Weekly and the first of 2021. Last week there wasn’t much news about apps, but there was a lot of holiday stuff. Let’s dive right into:

  • The Google Camera received an unfortunate update this week. The update removed astrophotography features from the wide-angle cameras of the latest Pixel phones. It only works with 1x zoom or higher from now on. Google did not issue a statement, but consistent complaints about the performance of the wide-angle camera were probably the reason. • We conducted a survey to see what our readers like most about streaming in 2020. Among the winners were Attack on Titan, The Mandalorian Season 2, Tiger King and The Queen’s Gambit. It was a great year for streaming because of the pandemic and it was nice to see some good shows and movies coming out of it. You can click on the link to see all the winners, runners-up and nominees.
  • December 31 was the last day of The Office on Netflix. The program will now air on Peacock from now on. It is one of the biggest attractions of the Netflix service. It also serves as a reminder of how fragmented streaming is now. It’s a shame, but if you signed up for Netflix for The Office, you’ll need to use Peacock to see the rest.
  • We brought together the most controversial apps and games of 2020. There was a bit of controversy, including the removal of Fortnite from Google Play and the Apple App Store, Totok spying on people, the final demise of Cheetah Mobile and all the things that Zoom did of wrong was pushed into meaning due to the pandemic. You can click on the link to see all the details of each one.
  • Finally, we also brought together the best Android apps and Android games released in 2020. In fact, it was a pretty decent year with games like Dead Cell, Levelhead and Genshin Impact along with apps like Plexamp, Vivaldi Browser and the huge Firefox Daylight update . You can click on each link to read our full list along with some honorable mentions.

Basketball vs zombies

Price: Free to play

Basketball vs Zombies is an arcade game with a few different game elements. The first part shows you killing zombies with a baseball bat. In the second, you throw zombie heads into a basket to score points. Some of the game’s features include 50 character skins, 60 weapons and a silly premise. It certainly won’t win any prizes, but it’s a fun little arcade game for fans of the zombie genre. The game is also in the beta version of Early Access, so expect some bugs as the developers get things done.

Taskito

Price: Free / $ 4.99

Taskito is a new task list application and one of the best we’ve seen in a while. The application has an elegant user interface, many features and an integrated calendar to kill two birds with one stone. Taskito works first as a calendar. You can plan your day, add events and do the usual things. The task list is at the bottom and anything on the calendar can also be a task, if you want. It also supports lists so you can do things like shopping lists, to-do lists, and the like. There are also more than 15 themes and some other customization options. This does not require a subscription. Instead, it works with a complementary model. Honestly, we only recommend the $ 4.99 price for all features at once.

Run Boggo Run

Price: $ 0.99

Run Boggo Run is an interesting endless runner for two reasons. On the one hand, it is a little more difficult than most arcade runners in the Play Store. Second, it is published by BuzzFeed. Yes, that BuzzFeed. The game features achievements, some extras like wallpapers and a premise for the whole family. It costs $ 0.99 in cash and does not include advertisements or in-app purchases at the time of this writing. In fact, it’s not that bad. However, many players were not prepared for the higher-than-average difficulty, so their rating on the Play Store is slightly lower than it should be. In any case, this is a good endless premium runner to start 2021.

Proton Calendar

Price: Free

Proton Calendar is the latest application from the developers of ProtonMail and Proton VPN. This is obviously a calendar application. The app has encryption and enhanced privacy and security features like all other developer apps. It does not promise ads, trackers and data sharing so you can plan your day in peace. In addition, the encryption is strong enough that even Proton cannot see your stuff, let alone anyone else. In terms of features, it is a decent calendar app. You can create events, manage ten independent calendars, set recurring events (such as the trash day) and even add notifications to events to remind you of things. There is also a light and dark theme, if necessary. It is in the beta version of Early Access now, so there are still bugs, but it will probably be one of the best when it is fully started.

Bikepark.io

Price: Free

Bikepark.io is a new IO game. This is a bicycle racing game. You and other players run through various courses until someone wins. Players advance automatically and at increasing speeds. The challenge is not to leave the track and not to hit the obstacles. The first level is super easy and, to be honest, you don’t really need to move your character. The second level gets more difficult and continues from there. It’s a decent little arcade game. The game is also suitable for children. You certainly won’t win any prizes, but it’s not a bad way to kill a few minutes.
