The San Francisco 49ers is signing former Arizona Cardinals receiver Trent Sherfield for a year, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

“Sherfield excels on special teams, but the Niners like his skill as a receiver and he will have a chance to get a role there, especially with the departure of Kendrick Bourne,” wrote Garafolo.

Arizona hired Sherfield as a non-hired free agent for Vanderbilt in 2018. He recorded five receptions for 50 yards in 15 games with the Cardinals in 2020 and managed 28 passes for 340 yards with a touchdown in his three NFL seasons.

Sherfield, 25, was a restricted free agent that the cardinals chose not to run. If he had stayed in Arizona, he would probably have to compete for a spot at the bottom of the depth chart. The recipient may be facing a similar situation with San Francisco. Sherfield’s contributions as a player on special teams can help, however. He has played 504 snaps on special teams in the past three seasons, with 424 of them coming in the past two years.
