The San Francisco 49ers lost vice president of players’ team Martin Mayhew, who left to become the general manager in Washington. 49ers general manager John Lynch might be looking to Washington to find some additional help in his own office and to replace Mayhew, who was considered to be one of his top lieutenants.
Sports Illustrated’s Chris Russell told 106.7 The Fan in the Washington DC area that the 49ers are among the teams expressing interest in the Washington Football Team VP from players’ staff Kyle Smith (h / t to Patrick Tulini), who has been with the organization for 10 years and oversaw the latest versions of the team.
“I heard that Washington would not get in their way,” Russell told 106.7 The Fan of a possible side transfer from Washington to the 49ers.
The other teams that have expressed interest in Smith are the Los Angeles Rams, Green Bay Packers and Oakland Raiders.
Smith, 36, started out as a Boy Scout in Washington in 2011. He was promoted to staff director at the college in 2017 and then to his current position in 2020.
“The news of Smith’s departure was described as ‘inevitable’ by a source on Thursday night,” wrote Russell for SI. “Smith’s expected departure is likely to be labeled as a ‘mutual separation’ between the only NFL organization he has ever worked for.”
