On Saturday, we saw Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network go on television and say that his sources heard the 49ers plan to move on with Jimmy Garoppolo next season:
At first, no one knew what to do with Garafolo, after rumors of Stafford to 49er have been rampant for the past two weeks.
Then, late on Saturday night, the Los Angeles Rams acquired Matthew Stafford from Lions. The Rams ended Jared Goff, and although Los Angeles has not had a choice in the first round for eight years, McVay continues to lead his team into the playoffs year after year.
There is no way for 49ers to give up so much recruiting capital for Stafford. I could only imagine the rage this morning if Stafford had been negotiated with San Francisco. We no longer need to play that hypothesis.
On Saturday morning, former ESPN reporter Josina Anderson tweeted:
League font text on #Lions business talks for QB Matthew Stafford: “I’m sure they’ll get a deal, but now they’re looking for a sucker to overpay.”

The 49ers would not be the sucker. However, it should be noted that one of the choices in the first round was probably due to the discharge of Goff’s contract. Peter Schrager of the NFL Network reported that Stafford wanted to play for Rams.
Matt Maiocco said you heard the 49ers were not serious players a few days ago when it came to the Stafford takeover. Maiocco said he does not doubt that the Niners were interested from the start, but they would not go “all-in” as the Rams chose.
It’s Sunday morning and Garoppolo is still the defender of the 49ers. The Texans said they have no interest in negotiating with Deshaun Watson. Garoppolo isn’t going anywhere unless an update comes at an affordable cost to San Francisco. I don’t think there is a cost that Watson is not worth, but he is the only defender for whom you could say that.
If it weren’t for Watson, it would seem that the Niners would go with our first off-season plan, where Garoppolo begins the season, and the 49ers recruit a newcomer at the start of the NFL draft.
