David Carr knows what it’s like to be in a bad position for a quarterback. His time with the Houston Texans was far from easy. He must feel bad, by far, for what the Detroit Lions did to the career of Matthew Stafford, a former number one in the general choice.
Fortunately for Stafford, it looks like he and the Lions have agreed to separate each other. Carr believes that a change is better for Stafford, and he lists only one team ahead of the 49ers when it comes to Stafford’s next destination: The Indianapolis Colts.
The Colts are a winning team now, whose starting quarterback Philip Rivers recently announced his retirement. It would also take Stafford out of the NFC. But the 49ers also makes a lot of sense. Carr believes that Stafford would cost 49ers two choices in the first round, and he also believes that Stafford is worth that price to San Francisco.
“Replacing Jimmy Garoppolo with Stafford would immediately increase that offense,” wrote Carr. “Garoppolo sometimes has difficulties with his mechanics and is very robotic when taking his readings; meanwhile, the experienced and knowledgeable Stafford is able to read the defenses and know which player to catch the ball for and when to make it.”
Despite dealing with injuries and another bad Lions team, Stafford shot for 4,084 yards this season. He has thrown more than 4,000 yards eight times in his 12-year career. The 49ers have not had a 4,000 yard passer since Jeff Garcia in 2000.
Let it penetrate.

Carr also explained why the 49ers would be in a good position to leave Garoppolo financially.
“Garoppolo’s contract is easy for the 49ers to move on, as they would only receive $ 2.8 million if they released him, while saving $ 24 million against the limit,” Carr wrote.
49ers can be opened for a QB update and Stafford looks like the most realistic update. With the right flag, this team is still a contender for the Super Bowl. Carr agrees.
