The San Francisco 49ers announced on Monday that the team hired QB Josh Rosen and RB Austin Walter for one-year extensions.
Rosen (6-4, 226) was originally drawn up by Arizona Cardinals in 10th overall in the 2018 NFL Draft. Over his three-year career in the NFL with the Cardinals (2018) and Miami Dolphins (2019), he appeared in 20 games (16 matches) and completed 275 passes from 502 attempts to 2,845 yards and 12 touchdowns.
In 2020, Rosen was released from Miami on September 4 and later signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers training team on September 6. He was hired by the 49ers’ active team on December 23, where he spent the rest of the season.
Born in Bellflower, California, aged 23, Rosen attended UCLA, where he started 30 games and completed 712 of his 1,170 passing attempts for 9,340 yards and 59 touchdowns. As a junior in 2017, he started 11 games, completed 283 of 452 passing attempts for 3,756 yards and 26 touchdowns and won 12 honors from the Second-Team All-Pac.
Walter (5-8, 202) was hired by the 49ers training team on September 23, 2020 and later promoted to the active squad on November 11, 2020. He was in action in four games for San Francisco and registered a carry for three yards, a reception for 27 yards in the attack and returned five kickoffs for 93 yards on special teams.
Walter originally joined the NFL after signing with the 49ers as a non-hired free agent on May 6, 2019. He passed the training camp with the team and was later released on August 31, 2019. He then signed with the New York Giants training team on September 18, 2019. Walter was promoted to the active Giants roster on October 10, 2019, appeared in a game and was later dismissed on October 14, 2019. He also spent a XFL time with the Dallas Renegades in 2020, where he appeared in five games and recorded four runs for 19 yards and two receptions for 31 yards.
Born in Crosby, Texas, aged 24, Walter studied at Rice University, where he appeared in 49 games (four games) during his four-year career with the Owls and recorded 345 runs for 1,744 yards and 13 touchdowns for 79 receptions for 803 yards and five touchdowns over the air. He also added 71 initial returns for 1,548 yards (21.8 average).
