465 more COVID-19 cases, 6 deaths reported in Utah on Sunday

SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Department of Health reported on Sunday another 465 confirmed cases of COVID-19 testing in the state and six new deaths from the disease.

The department also said 14,243 more vaccines were administered compared to Saturday’s numbers.

Last week, Utah had an average of 647 cases reported per day and a positive test rate of 5.2%. There are currently 203 Utahns hospitalized due to COVID-19, including 84 in intensive care.

The state’s general ICU capacity fell just below 70%, to 69.8%, on Sunday, after months of overcrowding. As of January 15, the state was using more than 93% of the ICU’s capacity.

Sunday’s numbers came when 8,422 more tests were conducted in Utah, the health department said.

Overall, there have been 371,235 confirmed cases, 1,935 deaths and 716,536 vaccines administered in Utah since the pandemic began. Of these vaccines, 254,569 were secondary doses.

The state administered 368,114 doses of the Pfizer vaccine and 348,422 of the Modern vaccine, both of which require two injections for maximum effectiveness. The Johnson & Johnson single-dose vaccine was approved on Saturday by the Food and Drug Administration and may be available in Utah later this week.

The six deaths reported on Sunday included:

  • A woman from Salt Lake County between 65 and 84 who was a resident of a long-term care institution
  • A man from Salt Lake County between 45 and 64 who was hospitalized when he died
  • A Summit County man between 45 and 64 who was not hospitalized when he died
  • A man from Tooele County between 45 and 64 who has not been hospitalized
  • A Utah county man over 85 who was a resident of a long-term care institution
  • A woman from Weber County between 65 and 84 years old who was a resident of a long-term care institution
