453 more cases of COVID-19, 3 deaths, 29K vaccinations reported Friday in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY – The number of COVID-19 cases in Utah increased by 453 on Friday, with three more deaths and 29,117 vaccinations reported, according to the Utah Department of Health.

All three deaths occurred before March 1, but were still being investigated, according to the health department.

The health department now estimates that there are 10,181 active cases of COVID-19 in Utah. The average number of positive cases per day for seven days is now 418, according to the health department. The rate of positive test per day for that period of time reported with the “people over people” method is now 7.4%. The rate of positive test per day, averaged over seven days, calculated using the “test on test” method is now 3.8%.

There are now 130 COVID-19 patients currently hospitalized in Utah, including 50 in intensive care, state data show. About 69% of beds in intensive care units in Utah are occupied, including 74% in the state’s 16 referral hospitals. About 54% of non-ICU hospital beds are occupied until Friday, state data show.

1,262,108 vaccines have already been administered in the state, compared to 1,232,991 on Thursday. A total of 834,899 Utahns have already received at least one dose of vaccine, while 460,047 are fully vaccinated, according to state data. A total of 1,477,870 doses of vaccine have been sent to Utah so far.

The new figures indicate an increase of 0.1% in positive cases since Thursday. Of the 2,361,969 people tested for COVID-19 in Utah so far, 16.2% tested positive for COVID-19. The total number of tests carried out since the start of the pandemic is now 4,177,366, an increase of 16,782 over Thursday. Of these, 6,095 were tests from people who had not taken the previous test for COVID-19, according to the health department.

The three deaths reported on Friday were:

  • A Davis County man who was between 45 and 64 years old and was hospitalized when he died
  • A woman from Millard County who was between 45 and 64 years old and was hospitalized when she died
  • A man from Weber County who was between 45 and 64 years old and was not hospitalized when he died

Friday’s total gives Utah 383,713 confirmed cases, with 15,400 hospitalizations and 2,091 deaths from the disease. The health department now estimates that a total of 371,441 Utah COVID-19 cases have been recovered.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox and other state officials provided an update on the COVID-19 pandemic at a news conference on Thursday.
