Macy’s has notified employees at about 45 of its department stores that they will close in the middle of this year, CNBC learns.

The closings are part of a plan previously announced by Macy’s to close 125 locations by 2023, which the retailer described last February.

“As previously announced, Macy’s is committed to resizing our store fleet, concentrating our existing retail locations in desirable and well-traveled malls A and B,” a spokeswoman told CNBC in a statement.

“To that end, we announced the closure of several stores today that are in line with the guidance we provided in February 2020,” she said. “These closings bring us closer to reaching the right mix of stores based on malls.”

Liquidation sales have already started in some locations, and the rest are expected to begin later this month. A list of about 45 locations could not be obtained immediately by CNBC.

Macy’s operates 544 of its eponymous department stores, along with 34 Bloomingdale’s stores, 19 Bloomingdale’s stores and 166 Bluemercury stores, according to its website.
