447 more cases of COVID-19, 17 deaths, 31K vaccinations reported Friday in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY – The number of COVID-19 cases in Utah increased by 447 on Friday, with an additional 17 deaths and 31,146 vaccinations reported, according to the Utah Department of Health.

Twelve of the deaths reported on Friday occurred before February 19, but were still being investigated by coroners, according to the health department.

The health department estimates that there are 11,063 active cases of COVID-19 in Utah. The average number of positive cases per day over seven days is now 474, according to the health department. The rate of positive test per day for that period of time reported with the “people over people” method is now 8.3%. The positive test rate per day, averaged over seven days, calculated using the “test on test” method is now 4.2%.

There are now 176 COVID-19 patients currently hospitalized in Utah, including 61 in intensive care, state data show. About 73% of all beds in intensive care units in Utah are occupied, including about 76% of ICU beds in the state’s 16 referral hospitals, according to data from the health department. About 55% of non-ICU hospital beds are currently occupied.

A total of 1,111,185 doses of vaccines were administered in the state, compared to 1,080,039 on Thursday. A total of 737,243 Utahns have already received at least one dose of vaccine, while 402,988 are fully vaccinated. A total of 1,300,120 doses of vaccines have already been sent to Utah.

The new figures indicate an increase of 0.1% in positive cases since Thursday. Of the 2,320,731 people tested for COVID-19 in Utah so far, 16.4% tested positive for COVID-19. The total number of tests conducted since the pandemic began is now 4,082,117, an increase of 15,565 since Thursday. Of these, 5,967 were tests from people who had not taken the previous test for COVID-19.

The 17 deaths reported on Friday were:

  • A man from Cache County who was over 85 years old and a resident of a long-term institution
  • A man from Davis County who was between 65 and 84 years old and was hospitalized when he died
  • A Davis County man who was between 45 and 64 years old and was hospitalized when he died
  • An Iron County man who was between 65 and 84 years old and was hospitalized when he died
  • A man from Salt Lake County who was between 65 and 84 years old and was hospitalized when he died
  • A man from Salt Lake County who was between 18 and 24 years old and was hospitalized when he died
  • A man from Salt Lake County who was over 85 years old and a resident of a long-term institution
  • A man from Tooele County who was over 85 years old and was hospitalized when he died
  • Two Washington County men aged 65 to 84 and were hospitalized when they died
  • A woman from Cache County who was between 25 and 44 years old and was hospitalized when she died
  • Three women from Salt Lake County who were between 65 and 84 years old and were hospitalized when they died
  • A woman from Uintah County who was between 45 and 64 years old and was hospitalized when she died
  • A woman from Washington County who was between 65 and 84 years old and was hospitalized when she died
  • A woman from Weber County who was between 65 and 84 years old and was hospitalized when she died

Friday’s total gives Utah 380,787 confirmed cases, with 15,241 hospitalizations and 2,058 deaths from the disease. Currently, 369,666 cases of COVID-19 are being considered recovered, according to the health department.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox provided an update on COVID-19 at a news conference on Thursday.
