Forty-four new deaths were reported by the county on Sunday, increasing the total number of COVID deaths to 3,062. More than a third of reported deaths, 1,187, occurred in January.
Data on deaths in the county are compiled from death certificates or collected during case investigations and can take weeks to process. The most recent recorded death was on January 22.
The Orange County Health Agency reported 1,355 new cases of coronavirus on Sunday, January 31, increasing the county’s cumulative total to 232,391 cases since the screening began.
The county also reported 1,412 patients in local hospitals, 30 fewer than in the previous report. There are 392 patients listed in intensive care units on Sunday, two fewer than on Saturday’s report. The hospital’s patient totals are almost at the same level as they were in mid-December.
It is estimated that 21,578 cases of the virus have been reported in Orange County in the past 14 days.
The county update said 2,681,673 tests for coronavirus have been performed since the tests started locally, with at least 16,044 new tests since the previous report.
Of the 3,062 cumulative deaths reported by the virus, 830 were qualified residents in nursing facilities, 329 were in assisted living facilities, one was an OC inmate and five were listed as homeless.
The breakdown of deaths by age in the county is as follows:
- 85 and older: 33.96% (1,040, up to 14)
- 75-84: 23.22% (711, up to 7)
- 65-74: 19.37% (593, up to 10)
- 55-64: 13.26% (406, up to 5)
- 45-54: 6.56% (201, up to 2)
- 35-44: 2.32% (71, up to 6)
- 25-34: 1.08% (33)
- 18-24: 0.2% (6)
- 17 and younger: 0.03% (1)
It is estimated that 175,513 people have recovered from the virus by Sunday. The count of people who recovered is based on the cumulative case count from the previous 28 days.
