On Saturday, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health released new data, confirming 42 new deaths from Covid-19 and 793 new cases. The department also said that daily hospitalizations for the virus dropped to less than 1,000 in LA County for the first time since Nov. 23.
The new figures reported bring the county of LA to a total of 22,446 deaths and 1,209,632 cases identified.

At the time of the report, 979 individuals are hospitalized with Covid-19, 29% of whom are in the ICU. The test results were made available to about 5,946,000 people, with 19% of the tests positive. The positivity rate for Saturday’s test, in particular, stood at 1.8%. Although the number of hospitalizations due to the virus continues to decrease, it is still considered high.
14 of the new deaths today were from individuals over 80 years old. 12 people lost to the virus fell between the ages of 65 and 79. 10 were between 50 and 64 years of age, with three people between 30 and 49 also passing through. Of the reported deaths, five came from the city of Long Beach.

Today’s news comes in the wake of a major announcement yesterday, which saw Los Angeles County join 12 others in moving to the red level of reopening, closely aligned with a state-announced structure. This change came, according to the State Plan for a Safer Economy, after 2 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine were administered to some of its most affected communities.

As a result of this transition to the red level, cinemas, museums, zoos, aquariums and indoor restaurants will be able to reopen in LA County with 25% capacity, starting on Monday, March 15 at 12:01 pm. Gyms, fitness centers, Yoga and dance studios can open indoors with 10% capacity, requiring masking for all indoor activities, while retail and personal hygiene services can increase capacity to 50%, from that the same security conditions are maintained. Indoor malls may also increase capacity to 50%, but common areas will remain closed. At the same time, the school and the Institutes of Higher Education may reopen for face-to-face activities, with the necessary security modifications.
With LA County at the red level, private meetings involving up to three separate families are allowed inside the home, if masking and social detachment are in place. Meanwhile, fully vaccinated individuals can meet in small groups with others who have received both vaccines, without the need for masking or detachment.
In the latest Public Health report, Director Barbara Ferrer noted that we, as a county, “have made good progress and have more progress to make.
“We ask everyone to exercise caution and common sense in the coming critical weeks and months to avoid spikes in cases, hospitalizations and deaths as we saw in late 2020 and early 2021. Don’t let your guard down. Continue to follow all security measures, ”he added. “Stay masked, keep a distance of at least 6 feet from others and keep in mind that outdoor activities are much safer than indoor ones.”
