4 Steelers free agent quarterbacks can sign for competition

The Steelers may have just signed with Dwayne Haskins, but here are four free agents they can bring in to increase competition in the position.

Don’t let Dwayne Haskins’s hiring lead you to believe that the Steelers have their quarterback situation resolved for a second. Although Haskins was the 15th overall choice in the draft two years ago, the only reason he is getting another appearance is because of his position in the draft. On the NFL stage, Haskins fell flat on his face and it was difficult to look at his statistical output (especially his meters per attempt) without feeling disgust.

The two players ahead of you on the list are not much better. Mason Rudolph had a solid game in week 17 against the Browns, but still has limited tools to work and zero mobility to be nothing more than a statue in his pocket, while Ben Roethlisberger is on his last legs and it shows clearly.

Much of what the Steelers do as a defender will depend on whether or not Ben returns in another season (which seems to be the case). But even if it does, Pittsburgh is far from tied to Haskins’ reserve / future contract. Here are four defenders that Pittsburgh could bring in to increase competition:

Jameis Winston

Of all the free agent quarterback options that could be on the Steelers radar this year, Jameis Winston is the one who is arguably the most deserving of earning another place as a starter. While it was worrying to see a season of 30 interceptions from him just two years ago, he was also able to lead the league in passing yards (5,109) and launch 33 touchdowns at 25.

Winston still has things to work on, and decision making can always be an issue. However, no one seemed to care when Roethlisberger led the NFL in interceptions over a four-year period from 2015-2018. At the very least, Winston still has great talent in his arm to work and his 8.2 meters per attempt in his most recent year as a starter was a better number than Ben had in five years.
