383 more COVID-19 cases, 15 deaths, nearly 24K vaccinations reported Tuesday in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY – The number of COVID-19 cases in Utah increased by 383 on Tuesday, with an additional 15 deaths and 23,950 vaccinations reported, according to the Utah Department of Health.

Twelve of the deaths occurred before March 1, but are still being investigated by state coroners, the health department said.

Health officials now estimate that there are 10,536 active cases of COVID-19 in Utah. The average number of positive cases per day for seven days is now 443, according to the health department. The rate of positive test per day for that period of time reported with the “people over people” method is now 7.8%. The rate of positive test per day, averaged over seven days calculated using the “test on test” method is now 4%.

There are 131 patients with COVID-19 currently hospitalized in Utah, including 49 in intensive care, state data show. About 64% of beds in the intensive care unit in Utah are occupied, including about 66% of ICU beds in the state’s 16 referral hospitals. About 47% of hospital beds outside the ICU are already occupied, state data show.

A total of 1,178,728 doses of the vaccine were administered in the state, compared to 1,154,778 on Monday. A total of 780,081 Utahns have already received at least one dose of vaccine and 429,306 are fully vaccinated, data from the health department show. A total of 1,323,050 doses of vaccine have been sent to Utah so far.

The new figures indicate an increase of 0.1% in positive cases since Monday. Of the 2,340,071 people tested for COVID-19 in Utah so far, 16.3% tested positive for the disease. The total number of tests carried out since the pandemic began is now 4,124,865, an increase of 15,624 since Monday. Of these, 6,022 were tests from people who had not taken the previous test for COVID-19, the health department said.

The 15 deaths reported on Tuesday were:

  • A man from Cache County who was between 45 and 64 years old and was hospitalized when he died
  • A man from Davis County who was between 65 and 84 years old and was a resident of a long-term institution
  • Two Davis County men over 85 years old and living in long-term care facilities
  • A man from Garfield County who was over 85 years old and a resident of a long-term care facility
  • Two women from Salt Lake County between the ages of 65 and 84 and residents of long-term care facilities
  • A man from Salt Lake County who was between 65 and 84 years old and was not hospitalized when he died
  • Two women from Salt Lake County who were between 65 and 84 years old and were not hospitalized when they died
  • A woman from Utah County who was 65 to 84 years old and a resident of a long-term care facility
  • A woman from Utah County who was over 85 years old and a resident of a long-term care facility
  • A Utah County man who was over 85 and was not hospitalized when he died
  • A Utah county man who was between 45 and 64 years old and was not hospitalized when he died
  • A woman from Weber County who was between 65 and 84 years old and was a resident of a long-term institution

Tuesday’s total gives Utah 382,171 confirmed cases, with 15,323 hospitalizations and 2,077 total deaths from the disease. A total of 369,558 Utah COVID-19 cases are now being considered recovered, according to the health department.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox and Lieutenant Governor Deidre Henderson are scheduled to provide an update on the COVID-19 pandemic at a 11 am Thursday press conference.
