308 doses of COVID-19 vaccine missed in Brevard County, DOH reports

BREVARD COUNTY, Florida. – The Florida Department of Health in Brevard County reports that 308 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine went to waste in the county.

This number is cumulative since the arrival of the vaccination in the municipality. It also includes any vials that have been broken during transport or administration.

The number also includes any vials that have been defrosted, but could not be used within the recommended timeframe, according to DOH.

“These doses were not wasted by the county health department, but by community partners,” said a DOH spokesman in a statement. “We continue to work with all partners to ensure that no additional doses are missed.”

This is because Palm Beach County is currently undergoing a state audit after more than 1,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine were damaged last week. Governor Ron DeSantis said health officials wanted to inquire after receiving reports of doses that were damaged because they were stored incorrectly.

Following the announcement of the audit, News 6 contacted all DOH offices in Central Florida about the number of doses, if any, that went to waste. Brevard County was the first to respond.

This story will be updated as more counties answer News 6 questions.
