3 people killed after plane crash in Georgia, leaving wing inside mobile home

A passerby called 911 after noticing the wreckage of an airplane by the side of the road.

A small plane crashed in Gainesville, Georgia, Friday afternoon, killing three people.

Gainesville fire chief Keith Smith told reporters that the fire department responded to a 911 call shortly after 6 pm from a passerby who noticed plane wreckage on the side of the road.

The victims were identified as Dan Delnoce, 44, from Gainesville, Courtney Flanders, 45, from Gainesville, and Matthew Delnoce, 39, from Ohio, Hall County sheriff’s office said.

The bodies were transported to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Criminal Laboratory for an autopsy.

The plane was going to Daytona Beach, Florida, when it crashed in a wooded area near several houses in Gainesville.

“Memorial Park Road closed on Cross Street due to a single-engine plane crash. Use alternate routes,” wrote the Gainesville Police Department on Facebook on Friday night.

The Federal Aviation Administration will investigate the cause of the accident, said Smith.

He added that there were no injuries on the ground, but there was some material damage.

Part of the plane’s wing, he said, was found inside a room in a mobile home in the area. The family that owned the house was having dinner in another room when the plane crashed. Residents were not injured.

In addition, four adults and a child were evacuated from a nearby home after fuel spilled into the area, reported ABC affiliate WSB-TV.

Personnel are now working to recover the plane’s bodies, Smith said, adding that the Sheriff’s Office will handle the investigation.
