3 Kansas police officers wounded by modified shotgun inside vacant home: police

Authorities in Wichita, Kansas, said on Sunday that they are investigating a shooting that injured three police officers this weekend and are working to determine whether the shotgun was placed in the door.

A “modified loaded shotgun” was fired when police entered a town house on Saturday, according to a statement from Wichita Police Department spokesman, officer Trevor Macy.

“Apparently, a number of changes have been made to this,” Macy told The Wichita Eagle. “There are some people of interest that we are looking at.”

Until Sunday, no one was in custody, he said.

An investigation determined that there was no one in the house, Macy said. Before the incident, a home owner called 911 to report that he had discovered damage to the house and believed that someone might be inside, police said.

The police surrounded the house for several hours on Saturday before determining that no one was inside. Police chief Gordon Ramsay said at a news conference on Saturday night that it was not immediately clear whether the house was blocked before police officers arrived.

Two police officers remained hospitalized on Sunday, according to the launch. One was in a serious but stable condition, while the other was being treated for minor injuries.

A third police officer was treated at a hospital on Saturday and has since been released, police said.
