3 die when the car hits 9 people in San Diego; driver in custody

SAN DIEGO (AP) – A driver passed a crowd on a sidewalk in downtown San Diego on Monday morning, killing three people and injuring six others, including two who are in critical condition, police said.

The driver – whom the authorities identified only as a 71-year-old man – appeared to be driving in trouble when his car suddenly left the street shortly after 9 am near a community college and climbed onto the sidewalk briefly before returning to the road, said the San Diego police chief, David Nisleit.

Nisleit said the driver identified himself to the police and was arrested. Previous police said he tried to escape.

Several ambulances responded to the scene near City College, where on a typical weekday morning, there is a busy area with students passing by. There is also a large population of homeless people nearby.
