Nearly 300 kidnapped students were rescued in Nigeria’s Zamfara state, the governor announced on Tuesday. The girls are now waiting to be seen by health professionals before reuniting with their families. “Alhamdulillah! (God be praised!) It rejoices my heart to announce the release of the kidnapped students, ”tweeted the governor of Zamfara, Bello Matawalle, on Tuesday. “I recommend all well-meaning Nigerians to rejoice with us, as our daughters are now safe.” Matawelle said “bandits” were responsible for the kidnapping.
The students, all girls, were kidnapped on Friday when gunmen stormed the Junior Junior School for Government Girls in Jangebe around 1:30 am local time. Residents who live near the school told The Daily Beast that they reported “strange men” in the area to the authorities before the attack. At least 315 girls were reported missing on Friday, and it is not clear why only 279 were found this week.
