26 Minnesota fishermen rescued from an ice floe in Lake Superior

A few days after the US Coast Guard rescued 66 fishermen trapped on ice floes in a Wisconsin bay, first aid in Minnesota was called in to help rescue 26 fishermen who floated to Lake Superior.

Duluth Fire Department officials were informed of the stranded fishermen shortly after 11 am on Tuesday. Fishermen reportedly fished in “individual fish houses” before the ice broke off the shore and started to enter the lake, the department confirmed.

The first truck to respond rescued three fishermen while other vessels were brought in, including motorized and non-motorized inflatable boats.

An hour after arriving, the Duluth Fire Department teams – along with the Duluth Police, the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, the Mayo Clinic Ambulance Service and the U.S. Coast Guard – managed to rescue everyone the 26 trapped fishermen.

“Incredible work,” wrote a Facebook user in response to the news. The Duluth Fire Department also shared photos of Tuesday’s rescue, showing ice fishermen trapped in the lake, as well as emergency crews coming to their aid.

All 26 fishermen were rescued in an hour, said the Duluth Fire Department.

The news of the rescue efforts came less than a week after a similar incident in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, during which three separate blocks of ice separated from the earth last Thursday. The U.S. Coast Guard’s Traverse City air station was sent, along with local emergency teams, to rescue the 66 lost fishermen.
