21 FDNY firefighters injured while fighting fire in New York

Nearly two dozen firefighters were hospitalized on Saturday after fighting a massive fire in an apartment building in Harlem.

The fire broke out on the first floor of the six-story building on West 115th Street, near Morningside Park, around 7:30 am and spread to the second floor, the FDNY said.

Flames came out of the windows when 39 units and 200 went off and EMS personnel faced cold temperatures fighting four alarms, FDNY said.

“Our first units arrived in four minutes. Upon arrival, they made an advanced fire on the first floor of a six-story multiple residence. The fire quickly spread through all floors to the top floor…. The firefighters operated normally with great determination, it took a while to extinguish the fire, but they did a great job, ”said FDNY chief fire operations officer Thomas Richardson of the site.

The fire was reported under control at around 10:10 am. There were no injuries related to the fire, officials said.

Four firefighters were taken to the hospital with non-fatal injuries, the FDNY said. Seventeen others were taken to hospitals in the region with minor injuries, the department said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, said the FDNY.

The six-story structure was built in 1903 and has 18 units, according to streeteasy.com.
