When the UNC basketball program begins to close the book on the 2021 recruiting class, they will do so with two recruits signed up right now in February. D’Marco Dunn and Dontrez Styles committed to UNC in 2020 and signed their letter of intent in November.
This is just a two-man class, but it could end up being a good one in terms of filling some needs for the Tar Heels’ future. Despite being four stars at the time of their engagement, Dunn and Styles improved their game here in their senior seasons.
Dunn even moved up the recruiting ranking as a scoring machine.
Although the UNC has only two committed players, the future is still bright and a recruiting analyst believes that Styles is a great option for what the Tar Heels want to do. Eric Bossi of 247 Sports wrote about 10 ideal settings for programs in the 2021 class and listed Styles among those 10.
Here’s what has been said about how the Styles game can fit in with what Roy Williams wants to do with his attack next season:
Don’t wait for Styles to arrive and take a lot of deep jumps, but he is a willing shooter and what makes him such a necessary addition is the versatility he has. While he is a natural winger, Styles is big enough, strong enough and athletic enough to play like a small ball of four if Roy Williams chooses to add a little of that next season. Regardless of how you are used to it, it will add more length to your heels, an athlete on the wing that they could really use and a player who has a big advantage thanks to his versatility on both ends of the floor.
Styles is ranked No. 61 overall, No. 10 in his position and player No. 2 in the state of North Carolina in the 247 sports recruitment ranking.
The 6-foot-7, 93-pound Styles will give Williams a legitimate wing option off the bench while he will fight Puff Johnson for playing time. The good news is that the Tar Heels will have some open game time, depending on the returns of Garrison Brooks or Andrew Platek. Some others could go to the NBA, pending those decisions, but Styles is yet to have an immediate impact.
