2021 DGA TV, Documentary, Commercial Appointments: Complete List

The Directors Guild also revealed its nominees for documentaries and commercials.

The Directors Guild of America revealed its 2021 nominees in the documentary, TV and commercial categories.

Ted Lasso and Curb Your Enthusiasm each obtained two nominations in the comedy series categories. For Link, the guild appointed Commanders Zach Braff and MJ Delaney. For Curb, the guild nominated Jeff Schaffer and Erin O’Malley. The fifth nominated in the comedy series category is Susanna Fogel for The flight attendant.

The nominees for dramatic series are Jason Bateman for Ozark, Jon Favreau for The Mandalorian, Vince Gilligan for Better to call Saul, Lesli Linka Glatter for Homeland and Julie Anne Robinson for Bridgerton. Favreau won a second DGA nomination for his work in The Chef Show.

In the limited series and in the TV film category, the nominees are Susanne Bier for The Undo, Scott Frank for The Queen’s Gambit, Thomas Kail for Hamilton, Matt Shakman for WandaVision and the late Lynn Shelton for Small fires everywhere.

WandaVisioninclusion of on top of The Mandalorian makes Disney + one of the biggest winners among this crop of nominees. The expanding streaming service still has relatively few original scripted series aimed at adults, so having your outstanding projects receiving props from the directing community bodes well for potential future awards.

It’s also a remarkably big year for women on television, with some gaining recognition this year – perhaps most notably Shelton. The late independent filmmaker, who was instrumental in the development of Hulu’s aesthetics Small fires everywhere, was nominated for her directorial work at the 2020 Emmy, but did not win.

The Daily Show with Trevor Noah and The last show with Stephen Colbert each obtained two nominations, with both evening programs gaining nods in the regularly scheduled variety / talk / news / sports categories and special categories.

The Late Show is available both for its live episode the night after the January Capitol attack in January and for its 2020 election night showtime showtime special.

The nominees for the documentary are The truffle hunters (Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw), My octopus teacher (Pippa Ehrlich and James Reed), Welcome to chechnya (David França), Boys State (Amanda McBaine and Jesse Moss) and The painter and the thief (Benjamin Ree).

The guild is expected to announce its five film nominees and director nominees for the first time tomorrow.

The 73rd edition of the annual DGA Award is scheduled for April 10.
