2021 DGA Awards: feature film, nominated for debuting director

Other nominees for the principal guild award include Aaron Sorkin, David Fincher and Lee Isaac Chung.

The Directors Guild of America announced the film and the first nominees for the director for the 2021 DGA Awards on Tuesday.

The nominees for the feature film director are Minariis Lee Isaac Chung, Promising young womanEmerald Fennell, Mankis David Fincher, Chicago Trial 7is Aaron Sorkin and Nomadlandit’s Chloé Zhao.

Last year, 1917Sam Mendes won the DGA feature film award before losing the Oscar for best director to another DGA nominee, Parasiteby Bong Joon Ho.

The first nominees to the director are The forty-year-old versionby Radha Blank, I’m not here anymore Fernando Frías de la Parra, One night in miamiRegina King, Metal soundDarius Marder and The fatherby Florian Zeller.

The DGA, traditionally one of the most male-dominated guilds in Hollywood, for the first time nominated two women, Zhao and Fennell, in their feature film direction category. Zhao is also the first black woman nominated in the category of feature film director.

Previously, the guild of directors had nominated a woman in the feature film category only eight times, the last being Greta Gerwig in 2018 Lady Bird. This year, two more women, Radha Blank and Regina King, were also nominated in the DGA debut director category.

The nominees for the DGA feature film generally coincide with the choices of the Academy of Cinema in the direction category, with at least four of the five candidates repeating themselves in the Oscar nominations. Fifteen of the last 17 DGA award winners have won an Oscar.

Zhao, who won the award for best director at the Golden Globe, and Fincher, who has already been nominated twice as best director, for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and The social network, seem to be the pioneers in the director’s race. The nominations for this year’s DGA elevate Sorkin, long known for his script, in the race for the Oscar for director, as well as Fennell, who also received a nomination for best director at the Golden Globe.

Notable absences in nominations are Paul Greengrass (from Universal World News), Spike Lee (Netflix’s Da 5 Bloods), Shaka King (Warner Bros. ‘ Judas and the Black Messiah) and George C. Wolfe (Netflix’s Black Bottom by Ma Rainey)

The group honors two people of color among the nominees for the feature film, Korean-American director Chung and Chinese director Zhao, and three people of color among the first nominees for feature films, with black directors Radha. Blank and Regina King and Mexican director Fernando Frías de la Parra.

DGA announced on Monday its nominations in the TV, documentary and commercial categories.

The 73rd edition of the annual DGA Award is scheduled for April 10.
