There was a time when Apple’s naming conventions made sense. The MacBook Air was thinner than the MacBook, and the iPad Air was thinner than the iPad Pro. Things are much more confusing today, with the nickname ‘Air’ no longer guaranteeing the slimmest or lightest device . But if new leaks are true, the MacBook Air could soon live up to its name once again.
According to Bloomberg, Apple is working on a thinner and lighter 13-inch MacBook Air, which could be launched later this year. Last year’s MacBook Air M1 is currently one of our best laptops for graphic design, but anything that makes it even more portable power can only be good for digital artists on the go (ah, remember being on the go?).

Bloomberg says the new MacBook Air will have a thinner and lighter body, with very small settings around the 13-inch screen. The report suggests that Apple also considered a 15-inch version, but “is not moving forward with this for the next generation. As rumored for the next MacBook Pro, MagSafe charging is returning to the new MacBook Air.”
A thinner and lighter MacBook Air looks like a winner for us. By the time Steve Jobs took the first model out of a brown envelope on stage in 2008, its thickness was jaw-dropping. But with a design practically unchanged since 2018, the Air no longer looks so slim. In fact, even Apple itself produced a thinner machine in the form of the tiny 12-inch MacBook, which is arguably more airy than the Air (said things were confusing).
A smaller design would also help to differentiate the Air from the MacBook Pro. The current two 13-inch laptops are the same width and depth (30.41 x 21.24 cm) and the Air is only 0.11 kg lighter. In fact, with both capable of incredible performance thanks to Apple’s new M1 chip, choosing between the two is no easy task. If the Air really does get thinner and lighter, at least there will be an obvious choice for creatives looking for the most portable machine possible.
We were a little disappointed at the lack of new Mac designs in 2020. From MacBook Air and Pro to iMac, each new model had a familiar look. But with the 2021 iMac, MacBook Pro and now the MacBook Air, all rumored to receive a new coat of ink in the coming months, the only possible explanation is that Apple has been reading Creative Bloq very closely.
