2 MDOC officers injured during attack on inmates at the Baraga Correctional Center

BARAGA, Mich. (WLUC) – Two officials from the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) were injured during an attack on inmates at the Baraga Correctional Center on Wednesday.

According to MDOC spokesman Chris Gautz, around noon on February 10, a maximum security prisoner attacked a prison guard from behind with a gun, causing serious injuries to his neck.

Gautz says the policeman managed to contain the prisoner, despite the injuries, along with another policeman who was also injured in the attack.

All prisoners were segregated and the injured police officers were taken to the hospital for treatment.

“The Michigan State Police has been contacted and both the MSP and MDOC continue to investigate the incident,” said Gautz.

Both officers were treated and released from hospital on Wednesday night, Gautz said.
