2 Colorado police officers shot, 1 in the head, suspect in custody after deadlock in Pueblo County on New Year’s Day

PUEBLO WEST, Colorado (KKTV) – Two deputies from Pueblo County were shot on New Year’s Day and a suspect was taken into custody after a stalemate.

The incident began on Friday, when police officers started checking on a resident of Pueblo County. The resident reportedly made threats to the Tennessee State Patrol and the Tennessee Capitol building. The sheriff’s office tried to contact the resident along Tenderfoot Lane, in the Pueblo West area, once in the morning and was unable to locate him. A sergeant and a deputy left again around 3:25 pm and the suspect opened fire on the pair, according to the sheriff’s office.

One deputy was shot in the head, the second was hit in the shoulder. Both are expected to make a full recovery.

The tactical team for the sheriff’s office was activated and an impasse ensued. A non-lethal bullet was fired at the suspect and he was taken into custody. The bomb squad was called to the house and cleaned the place at 9 pm.

The suspect is a veteran and authorities believe alcohol was a factor. He was identified as Edie Lovins, 48.

The deputies were identified as Sgt. Rude and Mr Berumen. Both were released from the hospital just hours after the shooting.

This is a developing story and this article will be updated.
