2 children die in Detroit Christmas morning fire

A fire on Christmas morning killed two children and caused others to flee for safety by jumping out of a second-story window in a Detroit home, officials said.

The fire broke out around 8:45 am inside a two-story house on the east side of Detroit, the Detroit Free Press reported.

“It looked like fire was coming out of every window,” Deputy Fire Commissioner David Fornell told the newspaper.

As soon as the firefighters extinguished the fire, they discovered the bodies of a 4 and 6-year-old “burned beyond recognition” in a front room, Fornell said.

Two other children – an 8-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy – managed to escape the fire by jumping from the second floor of the house, although they suffered third-degree burns, the newspaper reported.

A woman in her 30s also jumped off the second floor with a 3-year-old girl in her arms, Fornell said. She is believed to be the mother of all five children.

She was not seriously injured, but was transported to a local hospital.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known, although there was no suspicion of a crime, Fornell said.

“It’s definitely a Christmas tragedy,” said Fornell. “Just awful.”
