2 Boston construction workers found dead in the hole, officials say

Two Boston construction workers died on Wednesday in what the city police and mayor are describing as a “tragic incident”.

The men were found in a hole at a construction site in downtown Boston after the first respondents received a report at around 8 am about two pedestrians hit by a truck, officials said. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

“My heart is heavy when we send our thoughts and prayers to families and loved ones in mourning for their loss after this morning’s tragic incident,” Boston Mayor Marty Walsh said in a statement. tweet. “I am heartbroken because two hardworking people lost their lives so suddenly and tragically this morning, and we will work tirelessly to understand how it happened in order to create safer conditions in the future.”

Boston Fire Commissioner John Dempsey said a truck had to be moved before first aid could be lowered into the pit to assess workers’ conditions. Once inside the hole, the effort shifted from a rescue mission to a recovery mission, he added.

Whether the men were thrown into the hole after being hit or were working on the hole is still under investigation, said Boston Police Commissioner Gregory Long.

The Suffolk Public Prosecutor’s Office is conducting the investigation to determine whether a crime has occurred, with the help of the municipal police and the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration, prosecutor Rachael Rollins added.

“It is a very sad incident about what started as a beautiful day today,” Walsh told reporters on Wednesday.
