1st case of Brazil variant COVID-19 identified in Wisconsin

The number of positive COVID-19 cases in Wisconsin increased by 434 on Friday, March 26, Wisconsin Department of Health Services officials reported, to a total of 574,870.

Among the positive cases, DHS reported on Friday the first and only identified case of the variant of the P.1 virus – also known as the variant of Brazil – in Wisconsin. DHS has also identified two cases of variants B.1.351 (South Africa) and 78 cases of variants B.1.1.7 (United Kingdom) to date.

NOTE: The state’s notification system did not release any numbers on Tuesday – which may explain the leap in cases on Wednesday.

There were 6,597 deaths in the state reported Friday by state health officials. On Friday, the number was reduced by two from Thursday’s count.

Of the positive cases, 27,353 required hospitalization (4.8%), while 561,393 recovered (97.7%), making up 6,721 active cases (1.2%).

More than 2.6 million had a negative test. More than 3.2 million have been tested.
