Wonder Woman 1984 was officially marked “rotten” on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer after a very divisive release over the holidays.
As the DC cinematic universe remains in balance, the supposed unfailing success Wonder Woman 1984 fell into Rotten Tomatoes’ dreaded “rotten” rating. Its predecessor was by far the most well-received DCEU film at launch in 2017 and helped pull DC films out of the dark, taciturn hole they dug for themselves. In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, WW84 was launched simultaneously on HBO Max along with its still successful theatrical release (if only by 2020 standards).
Unfortunately for DC, much praise Wonder Woman received did not return to the sequence. Amid the turmoil of Warner Media’s widely criticized decision to launch its entire 2021 slate on HBO Max simultaneously with a theater debut (the short version contains many theater-related bonuses that are unlikely to be paid for) and Warner’s ongoing saga Bros. Ray Fisher, executives probably expected Wonder Woman 1984 it would just be an easy dunk for them. It didn’t work out that way, and although many people watched the movie, just over half seemed to really enjoy it.

O Rotten tomatoes Scoring, which aggregates reviews to give a general consensus on a film’s critical success, operates on an approval rating that considers films new or rotten. After starting a new certificate, Wonder Woman 1984 just dropped to rot, which effectively means that less than 60% of critics in general liked the film. That said, the details show that the average score awarded was 6.1 / 10.
This means that 1984 Wonder Woman is bad? No, not really; technically it means it’s around the average. Criticism suggests, in general, that the film is good, but a decent part is divided between praise and low criticism. The most common problem with WW84 is that the script is confusing, and this is a sugar coating. The biggest difference between this film and its predecessor, apart from the general issues of making a sequel, is how strongly director Patty Jenkins was involved in the development of the story, and how much power she had to include specific things she clearly wanted.
This does not necessarily mean that Jenkins is personally responsible for the lack of a script, let alone the one responsible. It also does not mean that only problem with the film is its writing. The vast majority of complaints about the film, however, are related to its writing and structure. For example, the often cartoony tone, Dreamstone’s bizarre MacGuffin, the inconsistent fluctuation of Diana’s fleeting powers and, most definitely, the disturbing logistics of Steve Trevor’s return. The list goes on, since, in addition to the cartoon action scenes, almost all of a critic’s negative reviews revolve around confusing writing. Wonder Woman 1984 it’s not necessarily a bad movie, and it had some big shoes to fill, but the almighty Tomatometer spoke, and it didn’t have a lot of good things to say.
