17-year-old killed in Hwy 189 accident near Deer Creek Reservoir

WASATCH COUNTY, Utah – A teenage driver died on Friday afternoon in a three-vehicle accident on US Highway 189, near Deer Creek Reservoir.

According to the Utah Highway Patrol, the 17-year-old was driving a Honda Civic heading north near the 24 mile mark, about a mile south of Charleston, around 1:30 pm, when his vehicle left the right side of the highway. He corrected it excessively, entering the traffic in the opposite direction and hit a Subaru Crosstrek.

The Civic then spun and was hit on the driver’s side by a Toyota Sienna minivan heading south.

The teenager was pronounced dead at the scene.

Subaru’s occupants were not injured and those in the minivan were taken to hospitals in the region to be treated for non-fatal injuries.

The highway was closed in both directions for about three hours.

UHP said it was not known why the driver initially left the road.
