165,000 laying hens die in a huge fire at Hickman’s Egg Farm in Tonopah

TONOPAH, AZ – Firefighters from various agencies were called in to fight a major fire at Hickman’s Egg Farm in Tonopah on Saturday afternoon.

The Maricopa County sheriff’s office said police and firefighters responded to the farm fire to the south.

Authorities say firefighters have managed to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading.

A spokesman for Hickman’s Family Farms said 165,000 laying hens were tragically lost in the fire.

“We are devastated,” said Sharma Hickman, community extension manager.

Hickman thanks the firefighters for their work and says without them, “It could have been a lot worse.”

Hickman also says that as Easter approaches, each laying of eggs is necessary to meet demand.

The loss of property was reported due to the fire, but it is not known how much impact the fire had on the structure at this time.
