13-Run Sixth Paces Beavers To Big Win

SURPRISE, Arizona – Preston Jones hit the base seven times, Joe Casey he drove in five, including a three-race home run and Oregon State scored 13 in the sixth entry en route to a 20-4 victory over Gonzaga on Sunday at Surprise Stadium.

The Beavers’ 20 races marked Oregon State’s biggest number (2-1 overall) since a 23-6 victory over San Diego at the end of the 2018 season.

The 13-race chart came after the Beavers were already 7-4. Oregon State jumped to a seven-race lead thanks to Casey’s second home run of the season in the first inning, and RBI singles from Ryan Ober in the second and Troy Claunch on the third.

Jones, on the other hand, tripled in the first and second rounds, then drew in the third and fifth rounds. He was run twice in the sixth and again in the eighth.

Andy Armstrong drove in three to start the sixth entry dam. Ober, Claunch, Casey, Wade Meckler, Jake Dukart, Matthew Gretler and Kyle Froemke everyone posted at least one RBI on the board.

Jack Washburn won the victory with 1 2/3 innings without goals of relief. He entered the fifth after Jake Pfennigs started and lasted 4 1/3 innings, spreading seven strokes and four runs.

Oregon State concludes the game on Surprise Monday, when the Beavers face New Mexico. The first pitch at Surprise Stadium is scheduled for 2 pm PT (3 pm in Arizona).

The Beavers’ sixth inning of 13 races marked the highest number of races for the Beavers in a single inning, since he scored 13 against St. John’s in the second inning of a 19-3 win at the 2005 Corvallis Regional. The inning on Sunday it only lasted 41 minutes.

Joe Casey’s five RBI in victory marked the best of career for the redshirt junior, surpassing his best of the previous three. Most recently, he totaled that number with three against New Mexico on Saturday.

20 hits

Oregon State’s 20 hits against the Bulldogs marked the team’s most wins since ending with 20 hits against Washington State on May 4, 2018.

Oregon State’s attack has exploded in the past two games. The Beavers managed a total of 34 races in victories over New Mexico and Gonzaga. OSU has 36 hits in both games, adding up to 18 hits. Of the team’s 36 hits, six went to doubles, four to triples and four to home runs.
