11-year-old Texan boy dies of suspected hypothermia during power outage

An 11-year-old boy died of suspected hypothermia when his mobile home ran out of power during the historic Texas cold spell.

Cristian Pavon Peneda was found dead in his bed on Monday – after spending time in the snow for the first time in his life, his family told the Houston Chronicle.

It was his “first time [seeing snow]”said his mother, Maria Elisa Pineda, Thursday.” That’s why he was excited outside. Everything was fine. He was happy that day. He was not sick at all. “

But the mobile home where his family – who moved from Honduras to Texas two years ago – was in Conroe lost power on Monday, when temperatures dropped to single digits.

The sixth grader died in a bed he shared with his 3-year-old half-brother, who was doing well.

“He was already dead,” recalls Pineda of finding her son’s lifeless body at around 2pm Monday.

An autopsy was carried out on Thursday, but it will be several weeks before the cause of death is determined, the Conroe Police Department spokesman, the sergeant. Jeff Smith told the Chronicle.

“By all other means, he was a normal, healthy child,” said Smith.

He described the family home as a 40-year-old, poorly insulated, single-width trailer.

The family launched a GoFundMe page to help raise funds to send Cristian’s remains to Honduras.

“His desire was to see his grandparents again and that is what the mother wants to accomplish, please help in whatever way you can so that we can achieve this, God bless you”, said the page.

At least 40 people died as a result of the winter storm that swept the region earlier this week, leaving icy temperatures in its wake.
