Another 11 Maine residents died while health officials reported on Wednesday another 701 cases of coronavirus.
The number of coronavirus cases diagnosed in the last 14 days across the state is 7,898. This is an estimate of the current number of active cases in the state, as the Maine CDC is no longer tracking recoveries for all patients. That is more than 7,721 on Tuesday.
This marked a sharp rise in new cases after three consecutive days, when they dropped to less than 400, the longest drop that Maine has seen in recent weeks. Still, Wednesday’s report is a far cry from the dizzying heights that new cases reached – including a historic record of 824 – last week.
Five residents of Cumberland County, a resident of Kennebec County, four residents of Penobscot County and a resident of York County succumbed to the virus, bringing the death toll across the state to 530.
Maine’s seven-day average for new coronavirus cases is 546.4, down from 564 the previous day and 581.7 the previous week, but above 436 the previous month.
The new statewide case rate on Wednesday is 5.24 cases per 10,000 residents, and the total statewide case rate is 261.23.
Wednesday’s report raises the total number of coronavirus cases in Maine to 34,963, according to the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention. That’s an increase of 34,262 on Tuesday.
Of these, 28,253 were confirmed as positive, while 6,440 were classified as “probable cases”, reported the Maine CDC.

So far, 1,287 Maine residents have been hospitalized at some point with COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus. Of these, 198 Maine residents are hospitalized, with 71 in intensive care and 37 on a ventilator. Eighty-nine intensive care beds are still available in 395, and 213 fans are still available in 320. The number of alternative fans available is 443.
The total hospitalization rate across the state on Wednesday is 9.62 patients per 10,000 residents.
Cases have been reported in Androscoggin (3,847), Aroostook (1,062), Cumberland (10,128), Franklin (603), Hancock (704), Kennebec (2,685), Knox (525), Lincoln (407), Oxford (1,657), Penobscot (3,031), Piscataquis (174), Sagadahoc (653), Somerset (990), Waldo (440), Washington (527) and York (7,516) counties. Information on where an additional 14 cases were reported was not immediately available.

Another 2,793 Mainers were vaccinated against the coronavirus the day before and 1,699 received their second dose. On Wednesday, 71,707 Maine residents received one dose of the vaccine, while 14,140 received two doses.
New Hampshire reported 845 new cases on Wednesday and five deaths. Vermont reported 101 new cases and no deaths, and Massachusetts reported more than 3,000 new cases and 44 deaths.
As of Wednesday night, the coronavirus sickened 24,382,311 people in all 50 states, in the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands and the US Virgin Islands, in addition to causing 404,898 deaths, according to with Johns Hopkins University of Medicine.
Across the country, 16.3 million doses of the vaccine have been administered, according to Bloomberg.
