At a later press conference, Boulder’s police chief, Maris Herold, said 10 people died. She identified the murdered officer Eric Talley, whom she called “heroic”. He has been with the Boulder police since 2010.

The identities of the other nine victims were not released on Monday night, as police still notified their family members.

The video showed a shirtless man with blood running down his leg was escorted out of the store handcuffed by two police officers at a King Soopers grocery store.

The television helicopter video showed police and police vehicles crowded outside, including SWAT teams, and at least three helicopters on the roof of the store in Boulder, where the University of Colorado is located about 25 miles northwest of Denver.

The cops had their guns drawn and some of the store’s front windows were broken. Officials through a loudspeaker said the building was surrounded and that “you need to surrender”. They said to leave with their hands up and unarmed.

A man who said he was shopping at the store told KCNC-TV that he heard a loud bang, then heard another, and on the third, everyone was running. He said they ran to the back of the store, found the employees’ area and the workers told them how to escape. He said they were walking in single file, with their arms behind those in front of them.

TV footage showed an ambulance leaving the store, apparently carrying the bleeding man brought in from the store in handcuffs. The policemen helped some people to leave the store safely.

Colorado Governor Jared Polis tweeted that he is “following events closely at King Soopers in Boulder. My prayers are with our fellow coloradenses in this moment of sadness and sorrow, while we learn more about the extent of the tragedy. “

Kevin Daly, owner of Under the Sun Eatery and Pizzeria Restaurant, about a block from the supermarket, said he was at his store when he saw police cars arriving and shoppers running from the supermarket. He said he took in several people to keep them warm, and others boarded a bus provided by the Boulder police and were taken away.
