10 observations: Malcolm Subban, Blackhawks excluded Blue Jackets

The Blackhawks canceled the Columbus Blue Jackets 2-0 on Thursday at the Nationwide Arena.

Here are 10 observations of victory:

1 Malcolm Subban made his first start since February 15th and it was incredible. He stopped all 26 shots he faced, including 15 in the third period, for his second NHL shutout and his first in a Blackhawks sweater. He is now 3-0-1, averaging 1.44 goals against and 0.952 percentage of saves in his last four games.

two The Blackhawks recorded 29 attempts and 17 shots on goal in Tuesday’s first period. The Blue Jackets had just 10 attempts and five shots on goal. The story was different on Thursday, with the Blackhawks recording just six attempts and three shots on goal in the first period, while the Blue Jackets made 18 attempts and eight shots on goal.

3 – The Blackhawks reversed the script in the second period and were clearly the best team. They led in dominated kicks in attempts to shoot (25-12), shots on goal (12-3) and led in goal chances (9-6) and high danger (4-3), according to Natural Stat Trick. But, somehow, the game remained 0-0 for 40 minutes of action.

4 Patrick Kane extended his streak of points to four games after scoring the winning goal at the 8:45 mark of the third period. He has 10 points (three goals, seven assists) in that period and now has 399 goals in the NHL.

5 The Blackhawks had given up five power-play goals on eight occasions in their previous two games. They bet 2 on 2 on Thursday and only allowed one goal kick in 4:06 of the penalty time. Much better.

6 The Blackhawks improved to 8-0-1 by scoring their first goal this season. They are 3-6-3 when they give up the first goal.

7 Connor Murphy had a remarkable game. He recorded seven shooting attempts for the team, four shots on goal, two shots, a block and a +2 score at 23:43 on the ice.

8 Carl Soderberg was rewarded with an empty net goal to seal the deal for the Blackhawks. He has goals in three consecutive games, having only one in his first 13.

9 Cam Atkinson and Patrik Laine have added 13 points (six goals, seven assists) in the last three games against Chicago. The Blackhawks managed two shots on goal each in this game.

10 The Blue Jackets have the third worst percentage of victories in NHL head-to-head matches, but dominated the Blackhawks by winning 30 out of 45 draws, with a success rate of 66.7%.
