Today, SXSW 2021 starts a virtual film festival that allows all of us prisoners to participate in the fun. With so many films to choose from, we highlight some that make us salivate as if they were a large bowl of cheese. Whether you’re craving breathtaking horror, mind-blowing documentaries or heartbreaking dramas, we have what you need.

Alien on Stage

If you miss the live theater, you won’t want to miss this charming documentary about big dreams, alien invasion and bus drivers. Documentary filmmakers Lucy Harvey and Danielle Kummer followed a band of British bus drivers as they prepared to bring the sci-fi classic Foreigner to the stage, chest chests and everything.

Jacob Gentry directs Harry Shum Jr., who plays a 90s video archivist, who is obsessed with discovering a pirate sign. Did he stumble upon an obscure conspiracy? We can’t wait to find out!

Clerk

Kevin Smith thrilled Generation X with his wild indie comedies, Clerks for Mallrats, Chasing Amy for Dogma, we. This doc explores his life and career, jorts and everything.

Drover’s Wife: The Legend of Molly Johnson

Leah Purcell writes, directs and stars in this Western Australian, who follows a resilient bushwoman, who must not only care for her children and run the farm while her husband is away, but must also combat overwhelming loneliness. You had us at Western with a feminine facade.

The party

Popular terror gains a Welsh flavor in Lee Haven Jones’ Midnight film. Annes Elwy stars as a young woman invited to play the maid at a fancy dinner for a wealthy family. Little do they know that this meal will be the last.

Language classes

Mark Duplass and Natalie Morales co-wrote and co-starred in a drama about a Spanish teacher who develops an unexpected friendship with a student. Morales props, she also makes her feature film debut here!

Ludi

In Little Haiti, Miami, a diligent nurse (Shein Mompremier) pursues the American dream and her own self-esteem, as she struggles with clients, co-workers and an astute bus driver. Edson Jean directs.

Sound of Violence

Written and directed by Alex Noyer, this impressive midnight section stars Jasmin Savoy Brown as a young musician, who is building her work with sounds of suffering. They are not spoilers to guarantee that there will be blood.

United States vs. Reality Winner

Enemies of the State Director Sonia Kennebeck explores the stranger story than the fiction of Reality Winner, a former intelligence expert who became a whistleblower, becoming a polarizing figure in the Trump-Russia Investigation. If you are a news junkie, or even just a devotee of Dustin’s daily political posts, consider this a must-see.

Justine Bateman writes and directs this drama, starring Olivia Munn as a film development executive, who begins to doubt her inner voice. That voice is played by Justin Theroux, of course.
