1 of 2 people shot outside the Lehigh Valley Walmart died

A woman who was one of two people shot on Friday night in front of a Lehigh Valley Walmart died from her injuries, officials said on Saturday.

Investigators did not immediately disclose the woman’s identity pending notification of her family. Nor did they indicate that anyone was in custody.

She died at 7:40 pm on Friday at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest in Salisbury Township, from a gunshot wound or body injuries, Lehigh County coroner Eric Minnich said in a press release. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

Minnich said he ruled the form of mortal homicide.

Police were called around 6:55 pm to report shots fired in the Walmart Supercenter parking lot at 2601 MacArthur Road (Route 145) in Whitehall Township, according to a joint press release on Saturday by Lehigh County district attorney Jim Martin and Whitehall County Police Chief, Michael Marks.

Police officers who responded found the woman and the second victim shot near a vehicle parked in the parking lot with the engine running, the statement said. The second victim continued to receive medical treatment on Saturday.

“Through investigation, the initial reports of a child’s abduction were subsequently unfounded,” says the note.

The release did not describe anyone wanted in the investigation, which continues through Martin’s office and Whitehall police, along with the coroner’s office and the Lehigh County Homicide Task Force.
