1 injured in a house explosion in Hempstead on Christmas Eve

HEMPSTEAD, Texas – A man from Hempstead was injured on Thursday night in a domestic explosion, officials said.

At approximately 10:20 pm on Thursday, firefighters from the Hempstead Fire Department were dispatched to a residence on Block 1300 on 5th Street after reports of an explosion. Upon arrival, the units found the house heavily damaged and on fire. The crews quickly extinguished the flames.

One person was injured in the blast. Paramedics treated the victim on the spot before transporting the individual via Life Flight to a local hospital.

Preliminary information suggests that the individual came to the residence to look for clothes. When he opened the door, “some kind of explosion” occurred, said Dean Hensley, an investigator with the Waller County Fire Department Office.

A man at the scene said his uncle was injured in the explosion.

“My uncle’s house exploded,” said Luis Saucedo. “I just got here and found out what it was like and I was very worried about it because my uncle lives there, my grandmother lives behind the house and my parents live in the front. I don’t really know what happened, I just stopped at that. “

Saucedo said his uncle suffered severe burns.

“My uncle is badly burned,” said Saucedo. “They said he was badly burned. They Life Flighted him and stuff, but everyone is doing great. “

Arson fire investigators from the Waller County Fire Department Office are on site working to determine the cause of the explosion.

“We are measuring debris,” said Hensley, “We are looking at debris, we are taking pictures, talking to witnesses, so you know it will take a while to put the pieces together.”
