1 dead, several wounded in gunfire at a Chicago area hotel

Officials say a shootout during a large hotel meeting in a Chicago suburb left one man dead and several others injured.

BLOOMINGDALE, Illinois. – A shootout on Saturday morning during a large hotel meeting in a Chicago suburb left one man dead and several other people injured, police said.

The shooting occurred during “some kind of big meeting” between guests at the Indian Lakes Hotel in Bloomingdale, according to Bloomingdale’s director of public security, Frank Giammarese. Investigators were still putting the pieces together in what happened, he said, but “it looks like there were a few different groups participating in different events at the hotel” when “something happened and that was when the shooting happened, especially in the hotel corridors. “

People were fleeing the hotel when police arrived around 11:35 am in response to a report of gunshots fired on the fifth floor. Police officers found “several apparent victims of bullets” inside, the police said in a press release.

James McGill Jr., 27, of Chicago, was pronounced dead in a hospital, according to the Cook County coroner’s office, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Up to six others were shot, but the exact number was unknown because several people fled – including one or more possible suspects, said Giammarese. No police officers were shot, he said.

He said there are “constant concerns” about large meetings at the hotel in the recent past.

Located about 30 miles west of downtown Chicago, the five-story Indian Lakes Hotel offers 300 recently renovated rooms and over 650 square feet of event space, according to the resort’s website.
