The Golden Globes had sparked a reaction after not considering it Minari, starring The Walking DeadSteven Yeun, for the best picture category at next year’s awards.
This new film by writer / director Lee Isaac Chung follows the story of a Korean-American family pursuing the American dream in rural US in the 1980s, and has received great acclaim and numerous awards.
However according to Variation, Minari will not compete in the Best Motion Picture – Drama, or Musical or Comedy categories at Globes. Instead, it will be considered in Best Film – A Foreign Language because it is mainly in Korean.

However, a similar controversy arose last season when Lulu Wang’s Separation closed for the same reason – and many, including Wang himself, have criticized it Minari decision, mainly because it tells an American story and is made by American filmmakers.
“I’ve never seen an American film more than #Minari this year,” Wang tweeted. “This is a story about an immigrant family, IN America, pursuing the American dream. We really need to change the ancient rules that characterize only Americans who speak English.”
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu also denounced the decision, saying: “Just a note, Minari is an American film written and directed by American filmmakers set in America with an American lead actor and produced by an American production company.
“… And without breaking anything, this is a BEAUTIFUL story of an immigrant family trying to build a life from the ground up. What could be more American than that?”

User @angryasian added: “Minari is the most / best American film I’ve seen this year. This is complete bullshit. 1. The Golden Globes, as a whole, is a joke. 2. The rules are really bad. 3. Clearly, none which predicts a scenario in which an American film about an American family, set in America, can be played in any language other than English. “
Other users tweeted: “The Golden Globes basically says that every immigrant story – where kids & parents talk to each other in languages other than English – is not American.”

Yeun spoke earlier this year at Sundance studios about how he connects Minariscript, and it “captures the feeling of what the immigrant experience was like.”
“She caught the feeling of what a family is like, what marriage is like, what it is like growing up in a religious home… there are so many things I can relate to Isaac,” Walking Dead said the star.
“I’ve never seen many stories about other people carried out in a way that doesn’t idealize or romanticize them or require them to be influenced by external forces that validate their existence.”
Minari will be released in UK theaters on April 2, 2021.
