‘Birds Of Prey’, ‘Ma Rainey’s’ – Deadline

After the most cruel year and in the midst of the strangest awards season in memory, Black Bottom and Birds of Prey by Ma Rainey applied two victories each to lead the cinematic side of the Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild’s eighth annual award.

Netflix; Warner Bros

With Birds of prey is not among the five nominees for Best Makeup and Hair at this month’s Oscar, Netflix’s Black Bottom by Ma Rainey emerged as the Oscar favorite.

Pinocchio won the final night award for the best special makeup effects in a feature film at the virtual ceremony held on Saturday.

On the TV side, the championship winners included Bridgerton, The Crown, The Queen’s Gambit, The Mandalorian, Schitt’s Creek and Westworld.

The Kelly Clarkson Show and All this swept the respective categories of makeup and hairstyles for daytime television and children’s and adolescent programming. The other double winners of the night were Saturday Night Live and Hamilton.

Eddie Murphy to receive featured tribute as a craftsman at Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild

Legend of the Emmy-winning comedy and Dreamgirls Oscar nominee Eddie Murphy received the Artisan Distinguished Award from the MUAHS guild tonight, on his 60th birthday. He was introduced by his Coming 2 America Co-star Arsenio Hall on Murphy’s 60th birthday, and the tribute was presented by Murphy’s longtime team of designers, Vera Steimberg and Stacey “Cut” Morris.

The first tribute for the set of his work was for Matthew Mungle, five times nominated for an Oscar for makeup and winner in 1993 Dracula.

Glenn Close introduced Mungle with a story about how he and his team turned her into the title character of Albert Nobbs. She was surprised when she saw the finished product, saying, “It wasn’t me anymore.” Close said that when she Hillbilly Elegy paper came, “the first person I called was Matthew”. After the make-up transformation in the film’s Mamaw, Close said he had exactly the same feeling. “You are a great artist, you deserve this incredible award,” she said, adding that she is “sure” that they will work together again.

“Share your knowledge with others, be kind to others,” Mungle told the “younger makeup artists” when accepting the awards. He also thanked Close and his longtime colleagues.

Also set to pay homage to the ensemble of his work tonight is Terry Baliel, three-time Emmy winner for Miss Rose White, Deadwood and Hairspray Live!

International president of IATSE, Matthew L. Loeb, presented the guild’s inaugural Vanguard award to two artists who paved the way for others to follow in their fields.

Bernadine Anderson is the first black woman to become a member of the guild and break the barrier by getting a spot at Warner Bros. She was head of makeup at Coming to America and worked with Eddie Murphy for eight years. Richard Battle was at the basic level of theatrical productions broadcast by PBS in the Wigs and Makeup Department, decades before the captured and streaming performances. He was nominated for an Emmy for his work at the San Francisco Ballet, where he worked for over 40 years.

Anthony Anderson was the presenter of the program and opened with a line about learning “how to use the accessory of our PPE”. Let the canned applause be funny.

The “In Memoriam” segment featured a slow and exciting version of Angie Wells’ “Danny Boy”.
